At a minimum matter requires at least one subatomic particle although most matter consists of atoms. Three divisions of matter are recognized in science. Anything that takes up space is called matter. Planet earth is made of matter and so are all the stars planets and moons in the universe.

The mass of an object is the amount of material that makes up the object. All matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms. Matter material substance that constitutes the observable universe and together with energy forms the basis of all objective phenomena. A bowling ball for example has more mass than a beach ball.

The word matter is sometimes used to refer to a pure substance. At the most fundamental level matter is composed of elementary particles known as quarks and leptons the class of elementary particles that includes electrons. Matter is everything around you atoms and compounds are all made of very small parts of matter. We call these forms states of matter.

In science matter is the term for any type of material. Those atoms go on to build the things you see and touch every day. Different types of matter can be described by their mass. Matter takes on different forms depending on how the atoms are arranged.

Masses molecules and atoms. Air water rocks and even people are examples of matter. A molecule is the smallest particle of matter into which a body can be divided without losing its identity.
